Old  Default FINANCIAL TIMES: BEIJING TRIES TO REACH OUT TO TRUMP'S TEAM AND KICKS IT TO THE IRON PLATE

[Look at China, August 29, 2024] (See Chinese reporter Yang Tianzi compilation/comprehensive report) United States the general election is approaching in November this year, United Kingdom Financial Times (Financial Times) on August 28, citing people familiar with the matter, said that Beijing authorities have tried to contact the campaign team United States of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump several times, but have failed, highlighting the hawkish mood in Washington and concerns about the CCP's espionage activities.
Financial Times: Beijing's attempt to reach out to Trump's team kicked the iron plat.
United Kingdom Financial Times, citing eight United States and Chinese sources, said Beijing had repeatedly established contacts with the campaign of Donald Trump, the United States Republican presidential candidate, and even sent Cui Tiankai, a former ambassador to the United States, but those contacts were unsuccessful.
Chinese officials and visiting scholars, some of whom are seen as agents of Beijing, have struggled to get meetings with United States lawmakers, and now face similar hurdles to meetings with Trump's team.
Dennis Wilder, a former CIA ·China analyst, said the CCP may simply want to gather intelligence rather than seek a real discussion.
Although Cui Tiankai is regarded as a legitimate diplomat, he currently serves as an advisor to the Institute of Chinese People's Diplomacy. Wilder said the institute is "not a formal intelligence-gathering agency, but it is often used to reach out to international visitors."
Steve Yates, chair of the China Policy Initiative at the ·United States Priority Policy Institute, told the Financial Times that the Trump team's meeting with CCP officials was "almost beneficial." Trump's views on China are well known, and there is a risk that the meeting will be "misunderstood," and the former president's campaign is now focused on winning the election in November.
Steve Yates noted: "The discipline of members and agents of the Trump campaign is much higher than it was in 2016. He was an agent of the Trump campaign in 2016 and served as deputy national security adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney.
The hardline attitude of the two parties in Washington toward the CCP has intensified.
Beijing's overtures to Trump come at a time when both parties in Washington are increasingly hardline toward the CCP. Beijing is also aware that United States policy toward China is unlikely to become less hawkish regardless of who wins the election.
Foreign media quoted sources as reporting that some Trump advisers are worried that meeting with Chinese officials may affect their future positions in the government and may even affect security clearance applications.
The report concludes by mentioning that Washington diplomats are busy connecting with Ms. Ho's team after Vice President Kamala Ho replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee, but experts said it was unclear who she would choose to provide Asia policy advice. Ms. Ho's campaign did not comment.
Many countries are also reportedly trying to reach out to Trump's advisers to avoid a repeat of the mistakes of 2016, when they missed the opportunity to build relations with Trump by failing to foresee his chances of victory. Trump's advisers also want to avoid a repeat of the Russiagate investigation that sparked a 2016 meeting with Russian officials.
Trump's advisers are also seeking to avoid a repeat of the events of 2016. The Trump campaign's meetings with Russia officials before his 2016 inauguration, including those between Russia's ambassador to United States, Sergei Kislyak, and then-national security adviser Michael Flynn sparked a years-long Russiagate investigation.
Victoria Coates, a former deputy national security adviser to the Trump administration and now a Washington think tank, · Heritage Foundation, said that even the transition team's routine meetings with Russian diplomats in 2016 were used by "career government bureaucracies" to frame senior officials. She noted that potential officials who could hold positions in the Trump administration in the future are wary of meeting with hostile countries such as China to avoid manipulating or misinterpreting the talks and suggesting collusion with the enemy.
Victoria · Coates said: "It is not surprising that potential Trump administration officials who may hold positions in the future are wary of holding meetings with hostile countries like China, as these meetings can be manipulated or misrepresented to imply collusion with the enemy."
US media: If Trump is re-elected, he may impose 60% tariffs on Chinese goods
If Trump's election, he plans to impose steep tariffs on Chinese exports. The Washington Post reported in January, citing three people familiar with the matter, that Trump had privately discussed with his advisers the possibility of imposing a 60 percent tariff on all Chinese imports if re-elected United States president.
Trump stressed that the import tariffs would boost United States domestic industry and raise money for the federal government, claiming that first-term tariffs would generate $1 billion in revenue for the United States treasury. Before winning the New Hampshire primary, he said, "I fought communist China in the same way that no government in history has done, bringing hundreds of billions of dollars into our treasury; And other presidents have never gotten any money from China, not even ten cents”.
China has reportedly dropped to United States' third largest trading partner, accounting for 11.7% of United States' total foreign trade. The analysis shows that if China's "most-favored-nation" status is removed from trade with the United States, it could lead to the United States federal government imposing tariffs on Chinese imports of more than 40%.
Economists from both the Democratic and Republican parties in the United States said that if the above measures are actually implemented, the impact will be far greater than the trade war launched by Trump against China in 2018.
Trump tweeted in December 2018 calling himself a "Tariff Man," showcasing his populist foreign policy power, tough trade stance on China, and a "United States First" image.
The U.S.-China trade war (China–United States trade war is an ongoing trade war between the Chinese Communist Party and the United States of America that began in 2018 and has been going on since 2018.
United States President at the time, Donald Brown. When Trump signed the memorandum on March 22, 2018, he claimed that "China is stealing United States intellectual property and trade secrets" and required the United States Trade Representative to impose tariffs on imports from China under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, United States, as well as other trade barriers aimed at forcing China to change its "unfair trade practices."
United States alleges that these actions led to a widening of the trade deficit and forced technology to move to China.
