Shanghai hit by second typhoon days after historic storm
Shanghai experienced significant flooding on Friday as it was hit by Typhoon Pulasan, just days after enduring its strongest storm in 75 years, Typhoon Bebinca. Pulasan made landfall in the Fengxian district on Thursday night, with maximum winds of 23 meters per second (83 kilometers per hour), as reported by Xinhua.
While the storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland, heavy rain persisted throughout Friday morning. Social media videos showed residents navigating calf-deep water in various neighborhoods, although no major damage or injuries have been reported. State media shared footage of police assisting stranded motorists and a scooter driver trying to maneuver through the flooded streets.
By around 11 a.m., many flooded areas had been cleared, and the water receded significantly. As Pulasan approached, some parts of Shanghai raised their typhoon alert levels.
Just days earlier, Typhoon Bebinca caused extensive damage, toppling over 1,800 trees and leaving 30,000 households without power, prompting the evacuation of more than 400,000 residents. Experts warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of such extreme weather events.
