Vừa trở về nước sau chuyến triển khai ở Trung Đông, hai phi công Hải quân Mỹ đă tử nạn trong vụ máy bay chiến đấu của họ bị rơi gần núi Rainier ở bang Washington vào tuần trước.Đài CNN của Mỹ ngày 21-10 đưa tin, Trung tá Lyndsay P. Evans, 31 tuổi và Trung úy Serena N. Wileman, 31 tuổi, đă thiệt mạng sau khi máy bay chiến đấu EA-18G Growler của họ bị rơi hôm thứ Ba tuần trước. Nguyên nhân vụ tai nạn đang được điều tra, làm rơ.
Trước đó, hai phi công này đă được triển khai trên tàu sân bay USS Dwight D. Eisenhower như một phần của Phi đội tấn công điện tử (VAQ) 130, tham gia các cuộc không kích nhằm vào nhóm phiến quân Houthi ở Yemen và bảo vệ các tuyến hàng hải quốc tế.
Hải quân Mỹ cho biết, Trung tá Evans và Trung úy Wileman đang thực hiện nhiệm vụ huấn luyện thường lệ gần núi Rainier vào tuần trước, th́ máy bay chiến đấu của họ bị rơi.
Do điều kiện thời tiết xấu và địa h́nh khó khăn, nên cuộc t́m kiếm máy bay mất ba ngày. Cuối cùng, các đội t́m kiếm và cứu hộ đă t́m thấy xác máy bay tại “khu vực hẻo lánh, dốc và nhiều cây cối” ở phía Đông núi Rainier.
Theo Hải quân Mỹ, cả hai phi công thường bay cùng nhau trên chiếc EA-18G Growler, phiên bản cải tiến của máy bay chiến đấu F/A-18.
